Legends:

The place where the temple is situated once was under the kingdom of Arcot Nawab. And, there lived an aged couple, the husband worked as a Diwan in the Nawab kingdom. The couples spent, the money, which they had to pay to the Nawab, was spent towards Deiva Kainkaryam. And as a result of this, they both were ordered to be prisoner.

The couple did not want to accept the punishment as they spent the money only for for Deiva Kainkaryam. So, they went towards the Pushkarani of Thiruvedenthai Divyadesam and let their death happen in the Pushkarani.

But both of them were worried that they didn’t have any children to perform the Srardham for them. And it is said that the god himself performed the Srardham, Hence even today, it is said that the Perumal himself performs Srardham for the people, who don’t have son or anyone else to perform and it is done during the time from 12 noon to 1.00 pm.

And people who want to perform Srardham in this temple can join during the time of Pithru poojai by making the Sangalpam and dedicating it to the Perumal. The Neivedhyam done for this Perumal is Ven pongal (or) curd rice and along with it, Perandai and Yel Thuvayal is dedicated and the Perumal accepts it with full of kindness.

About the Temple:

• The Pithru Poojai, which is performed during Amavasai and Ekadesi thithi, is said to equivalent to that of the Srardham that’s being performed in Gaya.

• In the temple,a sacred Sri Maha Lakshmi Salagramam is found ,worshipping this Salagramam is said to create improvement in business wealth, health and Sakala Sowbhagyam.

• It is said the Perumal himself performs Srardham to our Pithrus, if we could not perform it. And that’s the reason why the Perumal of this sthalam is called with Thiru Naamam – Sri Srardha Samrakshana Narayanan.
Thirumalai Vaiyaavoor Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumaal

Location:
Thirumalai Vaiyaavoor lies about 74 kms from Chennai and 20 kms from Chengalpattu. While going from Chennai, after crossing Chengalpattu, one can find Padaalam Cross Road from where a road goes off GST Road on the right side. This road leads to Thirumalai Vaiyaavoor.

Other Names:

Thirumalai Vaiyaavoor has a beautiful temple for Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumaal on a small hill, which is also called Then Thirumalai. Goddess here is Sri Alarmel Mangai Thaayaar.

This hill has various names like Sri Vaikundagiri, Dhakshina Garudagiri, Dhakshina Venkatagiri, Dhakshina Seshagiri, Varaaha Kshethram and Ramanuja Yogagiri. This ancient temple has some interesting legends attached to it.

Legends:

Legends takes us to the Ramayana era. Rama sent Hanuman to bring the Sanjeevi hill to cure Lakshmana. While carrying the sanjeevi hill , On his way to lanka It is said that Sri Hanuman worshipped Sri Varaaha Perumaal and Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Puramaal on this hill. As Sanjeevi hill should not be placed on ground, it is said that Sri Hanuman shifted the hill from His right hand to left hand to offer obeisance to the Gods here. As the holy Sanjeevi hill was not kept on ground here by Sri Hanuman, this place came to be known as Thirumalai Vaiyaavoor.

Once a demon king called Hiranyaakshan took the earth and kept under his custody, hiding it deep inside the ocean. Lord Vishnu took Varaaha Avatar, killed the demon and brought back the earth to its position. After this Sri Varaaha Perumaal wished to take abode on a hill to bless the world. He directed Sri Garuda to bring a hill from Vaikuntam itself. While Sri Garuda carried the hill, a small part of it broke and fell near the banks of the river Palar and came to be known as Dhakshina Garudagiri. As wished by Sri Garuda, Lord Vishnu gave him Viswaroopa Dharshan in the form of Sri Varaaha Perumaal here at Dhakshina Garudagiri.

Aadhiseshan prayed to Srinivaasa Perumaal and told that he had a wish to serve as an umbrella to the Lord. Sri Srinivaasa Perumaal agreed and told that his wish would come true at Dhakshina Garudagiri. Hence in Thirumalai Vaiyaavoor Sri Aadhiseshan is seen above the deity Sri Srinivaasa Perumaal’s head as an umbrella. Hence, this place came to be known as Dhakshina Seshagiri.

Sri Ramanuja had worshipped the Lord here and named the place ‘Vaikundagiri’. He also had stayed in this place and meditated the Lord. Hence this place is also called as Ramanuja Yogagiri.

About the Temple:

The temple is beautifully located on a hill. One has to climb 500steps to reach the temple. There is also a road that takes one directly to the temple.Though the temple is known as prasanna Venkatesa Perumal temple Varaaha Perumaal is said to the Aadhi Murthy here.

The story of this temple dates back to 7th century. There lived a Shiva devotee called Poosalaar. Poosalaar was determined to build a temple for Lord Shiva at this place within his lifetime. He sought for help with many rich people who can fund him to raise a temple. But hardly anyone helped him.

Knowing that he won’t get any help, Poosalaar finally decided to build a temple for the Lord by himself, at his heart itself. As he knew all the Aagama Vidhis and nuances to build a temple, he wanted to start building the temple.

Poosalaar marked an auspicious day to commence the holy work. The temple started growing up in his mind. It is said that Poosalaar actually took the same time which will be needed to construct an actual temple. Finally, he also fixed an auspicious date for Kumbhabishegam of the temple. He prayed to Lord Shiva to be present for the consecration and offer His blessings.

During the same period, a king called Rajasimma Pallava was ruling this part. He was also was a ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and was building a huge beautiful temple for the Lord, at Kaanchi. He also named the God as Kailasanathar and the temple as Rajasimmeswaram.

The king also marked the same date which poosalaar had chooses for consecration. One day after visiting the progress of the temple work, he came back tiresome to bed. Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and told him that He cannot make it to the consecration, as He had to be present for consecration of another temple built by Poosalaar of Thiruninravur.

The king woke up shockingly and couldn’t believe himself He wanted to know about the temple which God informed him of. He immediately set off to see Poosalaar’s temple at Thiruninravur.

He came to Thiruninravur the next day and enquired with many people about a new Shiva temple built by Poosalaar. Nobody knew anything about the temple but directed the king to the place where Poosalaar was meditating under the Iruppai tree.

King went and asked Poosalaar himself about the temple. Poosalaar, on hearing the king explaining about his dream, was overwhelmed to realize the mercy shown to him by Lord Shiva. Poosalaar explained the king that he had been constructing the temple in his heart and had fixed a date for consecration.

Rajasimma was amazed to see the devotion and sincerity of Poosalaar. The king himself took all the specifications of the temple and constructed a temple for the Lord here. Hence his temple is also called Manakkoil.

As Poosalaar originally built the temple for the Lord in his Heart, the Lord here is known as Hridhayaaleeswarar.

When we hear the name Nithya Kalyana Perumal , we generally get tuned to the temple in ECR ThiruVidanthai Nithya Kalyana Perumal built by the pallavas. But this Nithya Kalyana Perumal is much unheard to many. I would like to bring in to light about this unique less know temple.

How to Reach: About Aappur: Aappur is a small hamlet near Singaperumal Kovil. Aappur has very less buses frequency. If you are travelling from chennai by bus then you need to board a bus from tambaram which goes via Oragadam. Alternative route would be via Singaperumal Kovil , from Singaperumal Kovil alot of share autos.

This temple is located on top of a hill known as oushadagiri ( Oushada- Medicinal , Giri - Hill ). we need to climb 500 stairs to get the darshan of Nithya Kalyana perumal. The temple is erected in conformity with agama shilpa shaastras.

Legends:

A king by name Mahabali, hosted a yaha to get the power much more than others, with the help of Sukrachariya. To let his ego down, Vishnu appeared there disgused and asked him for "dhana" for land of three feet. Due to his donating nature, the king accepted for it, unknowing that the disgused man is Vishnu. The vishnu taking the oppourtunity kept gaint leep, with first leg in earth and second leg in sky. and asked the king, where to keep the third step. on realising the presence of Vishnu, Mahabali felt ashamed and replied that there is no place with him other than his head. Vishnu kept his feet on the head. Due to the weight , Mahabali drowned in the ground. Vishnu granted pardon to him and blessed him.

About the lord
Suchindrum is the place where king of heavens Devraj Indra attained ‘Suchi’ i.e., purification. According to Sthalapurana Indra taken over by the beauty of Ahalya had cast amorous glances towards her. Ahalya was the wife of sage Gowthama . A fierce Gowthama then cursed Indra. Humiliated Indra sought immediate redemption to the curse. He came to ‘Gnana Aranya’ (as the place was called then) and started worshipping Lord Shiva. Mahadev pleased with Indra’s devotion relieved him of his curse and granted his wish that this place would henceforth be called as Suchindrum.

Temple:

This holy temple at Tiruvannamalai lies at the foot of Arunachala hill and occupies a vast area of 24 acres of land , is the largest Siva temple in India, and smaller only to the Vishnu temple of Srirangam in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Arunachaleswara is said to be at least 2000 years old, with the gopurums (towers) and stone structure dating back 1200 years. This dating is from an inscription in the structure that was made during the reign of the Chola kings who ruled in the ninth century A.D.

The Arunachaleswara Temple has a 60m or 11 storied high sculptured gopurams. There are in total 9 gopurams of which four are in the middle of the walls. The larger one is called by the name of Raja gopuram. Thirumanjuna gopuram and pey Gopuram are to the north and south of the temple.

On entering the temple from the east, there is the Thousand pillar hall built by Chola king Krishna Deva Raya. The exactly 1000 pillars are inscripted with the sculptures of the Naik period. The mandapam where the deity is placed and worshiped is known as the Ani Thirumanjaram. The sacred tank or pool of ShivaGanga is towards the south of the Kambathu iiayanar mandapam with enclosed corridor.

The third mandapa has 16 pillars and it is from this mandapa that the Pancha Murthis or the five deities give darshan on the day of Kartigai. The sanctum is reached by the main entrance in the east. The Rudra baga is covered with gold plate. There is the Devi shrine to the opposite of the Mandapa.

Legend of this temple :

Once there was a dispute between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu as to who was superior. Lord Shiva in order to put an end to this dispute appeared before them as fire in the shape of a glowing mountain. The two who were quarrelling did not realise who or what this 'mountain of fire' was. So they decided to search for the 'Aathi' (beginning) and the 'Antham' (end) of this 'Jothi' and whoever succeeded first would be declared the superior god.

Lord Brahma took the form of a swan and flew upwards in search of the beginning and Lord Vishnu took the form of a 'Varaha' (wild boar) and went burrowing in the earth in order to find the end. Each after flying high and borrowing low failed in his attempt to find the beginning or the end. Brahma did not want to concede defeat. While coming down he saw a petal of 'Thalampoo' floating in the air. He asked the flower to be his witness that he had seen the beginning. The flower agreed to his request. They arrived together and found Lord Vishnu and told Him that Brahma had seen the top and this flower 'Thalampoo' was the witness. At this juncture the 'Jothi' transformed itself as Lord Shiva and admonished Brahma for telling lies and the 'Thalampoo' for bearing false witness. He also decreed that no temples would be dedicated for Lord Brahma and that 'Thalampoo' should never be offered in worship. Brahma and Vishnu realising their mistake prayed to Lord Shiva to remain there as a 'Jothi lingam'.

Legend of this temple

There are several tales associated to the Uchi Pillayar Temple.

Legend of Lord Thayumanaswamy

As per this Legend their was women called Ratnavati who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. She stayed in the northern banks of river cauvery. She became pregnant and while the time for delivery was nearing she requested her mother to come to her place for help. But her mother had to cross the river cauvery which was in spate. Ratnavati prayed to Lord Shiva and her mother appeared before her. She was very glad to see her mother by her side and soon she delivered her baby safely. Later the floods receded and Ratnavati's mother visited her and surprisedly enquired how she had managed all alone during childbirth. Only then Ratnavati realised that it was Lord Shiva himself who had come in disguise as her mother to help her. Hence Lord Shiva here is called as Thayumanaswamy and thousands of people visit this temple to offer their prayers for a safe childbirth.

Legend of Lord Uchi Pillayar

The legend of Uchi Pillayar temple dates back to the time of Lord Rama. It is believed that when King Vibhishana attended the coronation ceremony of Lord Rama in Ayodhya, Lord Rama gifted him a statue of Lord Ranganatha as a departing gift. Lord Rama warned King Vibhishana that the idol should not be placed on the ground till he reached Lanka. The moment he places the idol on the ground the idol would grow into a massive size and will be unable to move it further.

King Vibhishana thus started his journey towards Sri Lanka. When he reached Trichy he was amazed by the beautiful course of river cauvery and he wanted to take a dip in the river. Since the idol should not be placed on the ground he was hesitantly looking for help. At that time he noticed a young boy near the river. The King requested the boy to hold the idol and cautioned him not to place it on the ground. The boy was in a hurry thus he told the king that he would count till 10 and at the count of 10 the king should comeback and get the idol from him. If the King failed to do so then the boy warned him that he would place the idol on the ground. The King agreed to the boy's condition and went to the river for a dip. The boy started his count and waited for the King. The King was totally fascinated by the river and he failed to heed to the boys count. The boy after counting till 10 placed the idol on the ground. The Lord Ranganatha idol instantly grew into massive size and was deeply rooted on the banks of the river. King Vibhishana hurriedly came back from the river but was too late. He tried moving the idol but in vain. Angered by the boy's act he started chasing him. The boy ran to the top of hillock and rested there. The King followed him and knocked him on his forehead. Instantly the young boy took the form of Lord Ganesha. Hence the Lord Ganesha is called as Uchi Pillayar and one can see a pit in the forehead of the idol even today. The Lord Ganesh then blessed King Vibhishana and told him that the idol was destined to be here.
Nachiyar kovil about 10 kms from Kumbakonam. There is a Garudar sannadhi there made out of salagrama stone.
The unique thing about this Garuda is when he is taken out on a procession the number people carrying is four. Then the number increases to 14 ,then when he move into the next praharam it becomes32 .,then when moves further the no of people will be 64.Finally when the idol comes onto the road the number is 148.At this juncture you can really see Garudar sweating. When the procession is over the number of people carrying the idol comes in the descending order. While the idol reaches its original place only 4 people carry the Lord.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18191775420162254786noreply@blogger.com1
